Courage the Cowardly Dog is an American animated horror comedy television series created by John R. Dilworth for Cartoon Network, and the ninth of the network’s Cartoon Cartoons. It follows Courage, a cowardly anthropomorphic dog who lives with two elderly farmers (Muriel and Eustace Bagge) in the Middle of Nowhere. The three are frequently thrown into bizarre misadventures, often involving the paranormal/supernatural. The series is known for its dark, surreal humor and atmosphere.
Courage The Cowardly Dog - Season 1
Dilworth pitched the series to Hanna-Barbera’s animated shorts showcase World Premiere Toons, and a pilot aired on Cartoon Network in 1996. The segment was nominated for an Academy Award, but lost to Wallace and Gromit’s A Close Shave. Cartoon Network greenlit a series from the short, which premiered on November 12, 1999. It ended on November 22, 2002, with a total of four seasons and 52 episodes produced.
Courage the Cowardly Dog received critical acclaim for its unusual atmosphere, humor, and themes. During its run, the series was nominated for 2 Golden Reel Awards, winning 1 additional Golden Reel Awards and 1 Annie Award. Spin-off media include comic books, DVD and VHS releases, and collectible toys. Reruns have aired on the network’s blocks The Cartoon Cartoon Show and Cartoon Planet, as well as its retro animation sister channel Boomerang.
